Our new community gardens initiative is bringing food security to rural families across Zimbabwe, helping vulnerable households grow their own nutritious food and build resilience that lasts long after a single donation is spent. A hungry child cannot learn, play or grow — and so nutrition sits at the heart of everything we do for children.
Why community gardens matter for children
When drought, inflation or the loss of a breadwinner strikes, children are the first to feel it. Community gardens give families a reliable, local source of fresh vegetables and a small income from surplus produce. Rather than delivering food once and moving on, we help communities build the skills and systems to feed their own children season after season.
How the programme works
Each garden is designed with the community, not simply handed to it. Mercy Showers Trust provides seeds, tools, water-wise growing techniques and ongoing mentorship, while local families contribute the land, labour and leadership that make the project their own:
- Drought-resistant seed varieties and basic tools
- Training in composting, crop rotation and water conservation
- Nutrition education for caregivers
- Support for child-headed households and elderly guardians
Families who once skipped meals now harvest spinach, tomatoes, beans and maize. Children arrive at school nourished and alert, and mothers tell us the gardens have restored not just their diets but their dignity.
The impact on vulnerable children
Good nutrition changes a child’s whole story. Well-fed children concentrate better in class, fall ill less often and have the energy to simply be children again. Because the community gardens keep producing season after season, that impact compounds year on year — a garden planted today is still feeding children long after the first harvest. Surplus vegetables are sold at local markets, giving caregivers a modest income for school fees, clothing and healthcare, so the benefit reaches far beyond the dinner plate.
Help a family grow
Food security is the foundation every other kind of support is built on. Learn more about our Nutrition & Food Security programme, or donate today to help another rural family plant a garden and feed their children for years to come.
